Top 5 Kids Activities to Do in San Francisco (By Sam Roth, a Local Dad)
San Francisco is an incredible city to raise kids in or to visit with the whole family. This especially holds true when you mix in outdoor play, hands-on learning, and community-based activities. Whether you’re climbing at Tunnel Tops, biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, or trying a new class through Trainn, there’s no shortage of ways to create memorable family experiences.

My wife, two boys and I live in San Francisco, and I’ve called the city home since 2013. As we enter the holiday season, here are my top five go-to activities for kids ages 4–10, all parent-approved, energy-burning, and genuinely fun.
Whether you’re a local or visiting, these experiences show off the best of San Francisco for families.
1. Tunnel Tops + Outpost Playground (Presidio)
This might be the most beautiful playground in San Francisco.
Built primarily from wood and stone, Outpost Playground is designed for real exploration: climbing, swinging, sliding, water play, and building structures with oversized wooden pieces. It feels more authentic and natural than a traditional playground.
On warm days, bring a swimsuit so kids can splash in the waterway system. On clear days, enjoy stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, plus nearby food trucks for an easy lunch. Kids can roam, parents can relax, it’s a win for everyone.
2. Bike the Golden Gate Bridge + Bay Area Discovery Museum + Ferry Ride
This is one of my favorite full-day family adventures in the Bay Area.
Rent bikes that work for your kids’ ages, kid seats, tandem bikes, or e-bikes all make this doable. Start in the Marina by Fort Mason and bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, park on the Marin side, and spend time at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which is packed with interactive exhibits my kids love.
Afterward, head to Sausalito and take the ferry back to San Francisco. The views are incredible, and the ferry ride keeps kids engaged while giving parents a break. You get exercise, hands-on learning, and iconic scenery, all in one day.
3. Ride a San Francisco Cable Car
A classic SF experience that kids never get tired of.
For a less crowded ride, try the California Street line. Pair it with a meal at the Ferry Building or somewhere in the Financial District or Union Square for an easy downtown outing. It’s simple, memorable, and a great way to introduce kids to the city’s history.
4. Carousel + Koret Children’s Playground + California Academy of Sciences (Golden Gate Park)
This is a perfect combo for kids, especially ages 8 and under.
Start with the charming and affordable Golden Gate Park Carousel. Tickets are sold at the nearby café, and lines usually move quickly. Just steps away is Koret Children’s Playground, featuring an awesome spider web-like climbing structure and a fast stone slide.
From there, continue the outing with a short walk to the California Academy of Sciences. Enjoy hands-on science exhibits, aquariums, and live animals. It’s an easy way to turn a playground day into a full, enriching experience.
5. Drop-In Kids Classes (Soccer, Basketball, Art & More) on Trainn
If you want something a little more structured, check out local drop-in kids classes on Trainn (https://trainn.pro/classes?city=San+Francisco). It’s a great way for kids to meet other local kids while participating in activities like soccer, basketball, skating, art, music, and more.
One of the things I love most about classes on Trainn is the flexibility. You can book drop-in classes one class at a time. And if you’re looking to move your own body too, Trainn also offers adult fitness and creative classes in beautiful spots around San Francisco.
One favorite: yoga at Baker Beach with silent disco headphones. Kids are welcome to join in the yoga or play in the sand nearby while you get a memorable yoga session in.
